WW1 German water bottle

Found this at a local militaria fair yesterday at Ashdown Camp, Evesham. WW1 German water bottle which has seen better days. It don't hold water now after what appears to be shrapnel damage from the rear to the front. The rear is concave in shape but there is some damage to indicate the hole was created by something bigger than a bullet? Found in the Mametz area, Northern France. I'm not really into war relics but found this an interesting item and a good conversation piece. :thumbsup:

I have about five WW2 examples in pretty good shape...the WW1 canteens are almost always in relic status.

I have one that I rescued and put back together...I'll dig it out and post.

I like relics and have a few in my helmet collection. I think they add some ‘balance’ and always get a comment from non-collectors. This is one of those pieces that really gets the imagination going and of course no question of originality. Great find Paul. :thumbsup:

I showed pictures to a guy i work with and he said its hard to imagine the story behind this water bottle. Wondering what happened to its original owner. Doesn't bear thinking about. :sad:

Hi Paul,

Here is my example and like yours it's a M-1915. I did do some cleaning as it was nasty inside.

I also added the simplified leather harness and the pressed corduroy cover.

It looks to me like the paint matches the spots that remain on your example...which I'm happy to see.

Nice example Don, looks good and would hold water unlike mine. I have a small collection of various water bottles, British, American and a WW2 German. :thumbsup:
