11th Airborne Division

Postby muckaroon1960 » Sat Mar 30, 2019 9:17 am

The 11th Airborne Division nicknamed the Angels was a US Army infantry activated in 1943 and consisted of 2 glider infantry, the 187th & 188th and 1 parachute regiment, the 511th PIR. Sent to the Pacific Theatre of Operations the 11th was involved in action at Leyte in the Philippines and the invasion of Luzon. The division also participated in the liberation of Manila and the raid on Los Banos Internment camp where 2000 internees were liberated. In these operations the glider infantry were used as ground troops rather than airborne. Post war the division was part of the occupation force sent to Japan and later one parachute regiment went to serve in the Korean war.
Deactivated in 1958 the 11th were reactivated in 1963 as a air assault test division to test the theory of helicopter air assault tactics and the deactivated in 1965 where they transferred to the new 1st Air Cavalry Division which saw service in Vietnam.

This embroidered badge is based on the original pendant used by the 11th and is post war manufacture and the story has it these were ordered by the 11ths commanding officer whilst stationed in Japan. Made from bullion thread on a felt backing and is approx 7" x 5". **==

Great looking patch Paul. If I remember correctly wasn't the 11th mentioned in "Band of Brothers as the unit Dick Winters tried to join but was declined? Regards Mark

More than likely Mark. I'll do a bit of research and update.

Hi mark, the 101st was to be redeployed to the Pacific but never went due to the war ending before this could happen. **==

Thanks for that Paul. I haven't had the time to watch that part of Band of Brothers again so I'm just going by memory but I think they indicated that Dick Winters couldn't wait for the 101st to re-deploy to the Pacific and tried to transfer across to the 11th from the 101st. Since the 11th Airborne was already engaged in action in the Pacific theatre it would mean that he would again be in the thick of it. The officer in command declined his application saying he had done enough and had earned the right to stay with his men of the 101st. Of course they could have used poetic license in the making of the film. Wouldn't be the first time. Regards Mark

Another Airborne patch to add to my collection. 11th Airborne SSI (Shoulder sleeve insignia). Fully machine embroidered on a khaki twill material which you can see from the edge on picture. This is original manufacture but is unused/unissued. I have discovered recently that US patches were made up until the 1950's to fulfill US Government WW2 contracts, a lot of which were sold into the collectors markets. However this doesn't detract from their authenticity as they were made to the same design, same materials and on the same machinery as the WW2 manufactured one's. Obviously if a patch has been used then this may indicate WW2 use but not all Divisions etc were disbanded after WW2. **==
