Latest Project.

Postby The Devils Bank » Thu Aug 01, 2019 5:25 pm

Got this one on fleabay, very cheaply I might add..

Not sure (again #-o ) what type it is? (M35 -M40).

Badly pitted and rusty, I loved this helmet as soon as I saw it.

There's hundreds of these helmets, in different states of decay, for sale..

They need help.

It needs a good clean up.

First clean up..

Trying to get the helmet rust free.

Not bad, but it needs further cleaning.

It's been in the ground for many a year.

Final cleaning..

Still bits of deep rust inside the helmet, but I'm happy with it now.

The liner band will be removed and cleaned up and put back on.

Love doing these projects, twists and turns

Markings on the liner band.

The liner was made in 1944, don't now what the other markings mean?

Is it a size 57?

The helmet is not bad shape considering it's been in the ground for a long time. The liner is a size 57 so the helmet shell size is 64. It has a late war steel liner Band dated 1944 in a model M40 shell so either its a Quist made shell or the liner was replaced at some stage in its service life. I can't tell from the photos but have a closer look at the markings on the helmet shell itself to tell this. A liner band like this one is usually found on the M42 (flared neck flange) not the rolled edge style found on M35/M40. Except for Quist who for the most part kept making the rolled style to wars end. Hope this helps Pete. Regards Mark

Pictures just to show the small holes in the helmet.

The red spots are the coloured towel underneath.

The helmet liner band will be put back once the new pins arrive.

Some people don't like any restoration work done to helmets at all :???:

If it's a rusting relic in a very bad state, then it needs help to preserve it.

The helmets I restore, are beyond most peoples capabilities of restoring a historical piece of equipment.

These helmets wouldn't get a second glance at a Militaria stall, it's just useless junk to most people.

How many helmets are thrown away, left in sheds?

My ones are restored using 95% original parts (if you can get them?).

Finally, got the first pictures of the helmet after painting.

Again, I didn't want a "new" looking helmet, just a nice cleaned up relic.

Here it is now:

So, you can now see the difference.

Sympathetically done, no added SS decals  , just a decent clean up.

Very happy indeed. :)

That's what I would call sympathetic restoration. Not over worked but as you say preserved.
