Italian Fascist Party - (Blackshirts) Fez.

Postby Dave_Holden » Sun Jan 28, 2018 3:41 pm

Here is the third thing I found and you don't see these too often - Fez with leaders shield from the Milizia Volontaria per la Sicurezza Nazionale (MVSN, "Voluntary Militia for National Security"), commonly called the Blackshirts.

Short history courtesy of the WWW;

Originally the paramilitary wing of the National Fascist Party and, after 1923, an all-volunteer militia of the Kingdom of Italy. Its members were distinguished by their black uniforms (modelled on those of the Arditi, Italy's elite troops of World War I) and their loyalty to Benito Mussolini, the Duce (leader) of Fascism, to whom they swore an oath. The founders of the paramilitary groups were nationalist intellectuals, former army officers and young landowners opposing peasants' and country labourers' unions. Their methods became harsher as Mussolini's power grew, and they used violence and intimidation against Mussolini's opponents. In 1943 the MVSN was integrated into the Italian armed forces.

The first squad of which was called Squadre d’Azione (Action Squad)—were organized in March 1919 to destroy the political and economic organizations of socialists. By the end of 1920 the Blackshirts were attacking and destroying the organizations not only of socialists but also of communists, republicans, Catholics, trade unionists, and those in cooperatives, and hundreds of people were killed as the Fascist squads expanded in number. A Fascist convention in Naples on October 24, 1922, provided the pretext for the concentration of armed Blackshirts from all over the country for the famous March on Rome that put Mussolini into power.

Early the next year, on February 1, 1923, the private Blackshirts were officially transformed into a national militia, the Voluntary Fascist Militia for National Security. The black shirt was worn not only by these military Fascists but also by other Fascists and their sympathizers, especially on patriotic occasions. With the fall of Mussolini in 1943, however, the black shirt and the Blackshirts fell into disgrace.

Its well mothed and I am pretty sure it should have a lining, which unfortunately is missing. The Italian border is close so I guess its not suprising to see the fez in the South of France.

Its a rare cap and I like it a lot - yes a little mothed, but I had to have it.

Thanks for looking.

Like you say Dave, it must be a very rare cap.

It's a great "find" and I'm sure it will worth a few bob in the future years.

I've never seen one before :shock: :grin:

The French guy I got it from Pete always has the odd items you don't see much of. There is loads of stuff here in France and at every fair I have been to I have found something unsual - I will miss it.

Below here is the cap (fez) being worn by the "Blackshirts"

Would be nice to have one of these daggers Mark, they are out there as I have seen one in France. Due to them being pretty rare, unfortunately they are expensive. The one I looked at a fair had a really nice blade - incredibly sharp all were made like this as a potential usable weapon. I may look again in the limited time I have here in France before I go home.
