WW2 German Pioneer Axe Head.

Postby The Devils Bank » Mon Jul 29, 2019 2:59 pm

This rather poor state axe head was found just outside Stalingrad, and I've been told it's a German Pioneer axe.

The soldiers were building a bridge when they were attacked, leaving this axe behind in their haste to escape.

I'm going to try and get it restored back to it's former glory.

Should be interesting..

Nice one, any pictures available of the German pioneers using one of these?

Quite hard to find pictures of this type of axe being used, as it's quite small..

I should imagine the axe shape, was pretty much standard to the era, and I'm sure lots of them were left behind.

Just glad to have a original one in my possession.

Work has now started on the axe, cleaning the deep pitted rust.

It's starting to return to it's former self.

Finally the "finish" I wanted, and it's looking rather nice.

All but finished..

The pioneer axe is back to it's best, having been in the ground for many a year.

I love restoring things (with the help of others I might add), this axe will be re-used for years to come :ymapplause:

Restoration completed.

Three stages of the axe head being de-rusted and cleaned.

Absolutely delighted with the outcome :ymsmug:

Very nice Pete, it's the perfect finish with a nice matt sheen to it. Would be great to find a period photo of one of these.
