Navy Fighter squadron VF31 Tomcatters patch

Postby muckaroon1960 » Sat Jul 18, 2020 6:47 am

Another patch for my collection, Navy VF-31 Tomcatters. Probably an unofficial patch and modern manufacture, over 110mm in height and 90mm across.
Known as the Tomcatters with the callsign Felix, they are the second oldest navy fighter squadron still in operation today flying F18 Hornets out of Oceana naval air station. Saw service in WW2, Vietnam and ops in the Persian Gulf and was re-designated VFA-31 in late 2006. The official patch is of Felix & bomb with the wording "Fighting 31" underneath.

Aircraft flown by the VF 31 squadron.

F3F
F4F Wildcat
F6F Hellcat
F9F Panther
F2H Banshee
F3H Demon
F-4 Phantom II
F-14 Tomcat
F/A-18E Super Hornet

Hi Mark, the VF is the US Navy squadron designation system I.D.

V = fixed wing aircraft and F= fighter squadron. There are different variations for various aircraft and their assignments. Some examples:

VA = Fixed Wing Attack Aircraft.
VA(AW) = All Weather Attack Squadron
VAW = Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron

There are others for refuelling , heavy bombers etc plus the squadron I.D, Number, So VF 31 = Fixed wing fighter squadron 31.
