Nimitz class carriers

Postby Andyb » Tue Jan 30, 2018 6:10 am

Here's a rare sight: four out of the ten Nimitz-class aircraft carriers—the largest warships ever built—plus an Enterprise-class carrier docked together. They are resting at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, which coincidentally is the largest naval base in the world. Look at all that engineering and firepower. And it's only half of the Nimitz fleet!

The other ships are not too shabby either, including six amphibious ships—the other "smaller" carriers on the photo, capable of deploying US Marines, Harriers, helicopters and other vehicles for amphibious assaults. These are larger than what other countries call aircraft carrier. I think I see the USS Iwo Jima and the USS Bataan, but please correct me if I'm wrong, sailors.

Here is a link to a great web site for all the US Navy and world war ships

This is great Andy - what the hell must these monsters cost to build. Great info and our new ship is a pretty big one, never knew it was that size.

As to the new Royal Navy ship QE , I am pretty amazed too , the only real difference is that the Royal Navy ship will have two control towers compared to the US ships one and the Royal Navy has gone for two catapults and relying on VTOL aircraft where the US has four catapults and the new G Ford has a revolutionary catapult system

Just to show the shear size of these carriers , here is the USS Ronald Reagan , transporting some of the personals cars to another base . This is a genuine picture and not photoshop
