1st Air Cavalry patch

Postby muckaroon1960 » Sun Jan 05, 2020 9:57 pm

Another patch I picked up today at a militaria show at Newark is this 1st Air Cavalry patch. Possible pre Vietnam manufacture but made famous by Francis Ford Coppola in Apocalypse Now and 1st Air mobile's attack on "Charlie's point" so thought I'd post here.

Formed in 1921 the 1st Air Cav served in WW2, Korea, Vietnam, the first Gulf war, Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan. One of the most decorated combat divisions in the US Army and has served as a Cavalry and Infantry Division, Air Assault and Armoured Division also.
This is a large patch at 5 inches tall. I also picked a US Army Third infantry division patch (The Marne Division). **==

That's a nice patch Paul, also looks as though it's been worn at sometime which is an added bonus. I think I have also seen this patch in the Mel Gibson film We Were Soldiers based on Operation Silver Bayonet.

Great patch

Contrary to popular belief patches worn in Vietnam were full colour and not subdued hence why they are seen in original pictures of Vietnam and of course in the movies.
