What and Why?

Postby Tailgunnerdownunder » Wed Feb 06, 2019 10:37 pm

This is a photograph taken of a U.S soldier during the Vietnam War but there is something very unusual about it. Can you tell what that is and if so then why? Regards Mark.

I believe he is carrying a German schmiesser. I guess this might have been his own property - very interesting photo Mark

Very good Australian Guy I see that you too have seen this article. Of course you are correct Dave but I will let others have the opportunity to explain why you have a U.S soldier holding a MP 40 or indeed North Vietnamese troops with a M G 34 some 20 years after the end of WW2. Regards Mark

Thank you Christopher but the most amazing aspect of this thread is why and that will be revealed tomorrow once everyone has the opportunity to reason why. The best of German engineering and design ends up 20 years later on the other side of the world in a new conflict. Weapons just as deadly make a comeback. How many of these are now on the collectors market not because they were WW2 ' bring backs' but rather Vietnam souvenirs? Why? How is it so? Regards Mark

Perhaps these weapons (captured by the French end of WW2) were used by the French forces during their war in Indo China and were left behind or captured following the French surrender and withdrawal.

Very interesting subject.

All sorts of reasons, such as Countries selling cheap stocks/arms to poorer nations?

As for the US soldier? I wonder if it may be a "bring back" from his dad or family member years before?

If I remember correctly, weren't there Soviet advisers in Vietnam? Perhaps a delivery of captured WW2 weapons as a gift to help the war effort from the Soviet Union? Russia still has massive stockpiles of captured German weapons even today!

Well the story goes that the Communist North Vietnamese forces were largely supported by China and the USSR. The Soviets have huge stockpiles of German weapons left from WW2. Some 20 years after the end of hostilities in 1945 these captured weapons were being supplied to the NVA and Viet Cong forces by the Soviets. All types of arms were supplied including MP 38's and 40's, MG 34, 42's and even PAK's (anti tank guns) etc. of course in battle these were captured by American forces and no doubt kept as souvenirs as in the photograph. Amazing stuff indeed  Regards Mark

I wonder what "other" goodies the Russians parted with?

A friend of mine, who is currently married to a Thai girl and is in Thailand right now, has told me he has seen some German helmets for sale, at different locations.

He is there for ten weeks, and has been going over there for quite a good few years now.

On his travels, he has been to markets and the like, and is amazed at some of the German stuff for sale. Not plentiful, but enough to catch the eye.

So this stuff must have been dished out at some stage, it had to come from some where.

If I remember correctly, he bought a German water bottle with a waffenamt stamp on it. He flogged it for £15 last year. #-o

Goes to show that you find this stuff anywhere. I have read that a large consignment of helmets were supplied to the Chinese prior to WW2 by Germany. Regards Mark

If the Chinese did indeed supply the Viet Cong, and they had surplus stocks of arms, it makes sense to get shut of them for profit.

It would be the last place (China) you would go to for this type of gear, but they must still have significent quantities stored away.

I would have a guess and say there would be plenty of weapons of all descriptions to be found reasonably easily in Vietnam itself. Probably hidden away in villages gathering dust :-? Regards Mark.
