The Big Red One

Postby muckaroon1960 » Wed May 01, 2019 7:13 pm

Officially nick named after its shoulder patch "The Big Red One" is the longest serving division in the US armed forces. The 1st division served in France during WW1 and during WW2 took part in Operation Torch landing in Algeria to fight against the Afrika Korp. The 1st was also part of Operation Husky invading Sicily. Returning to England in 1943 the division prepared for the invasion of Normandy and was the first along with the 29th Infantry to assault Omaha Beach. The 1st division served in France, Belgium, Germany and finished the war in Czechoslovakia. Its serving soldiers were awarded 131 Distinguished service crosses, 16 Legion of Merit, 4258 Silver Stars and 12568 Bronze stars for their efforts in Europe. A film was made back in the eighties with Lee Marvin and Mark Hamill about the divisions exploits during WW2. I remember the scene in the mental hospital where one of the inmates picks up a machine pistol and starts to shoot at everyone shouting "I am sane, I am one of you!"

Believe it or not original shoulder patches are quite rare as is this one a new addition to my collection which takes pride of place alongside the 2nd Division patch. **==
