324th Bomb Squadron Patch

Postby muckaroon1960 » Tue Jan 14, 2020 7:57 pm

You know i've always said "When you see it, buy it" and so after a short bit of deliberation and research couldn't resist this beauty.
The 324th Bomb squadron was part of the 91st Bomb group based at Station 121, Bassingbourn, Cambridgeshire along with the 322nd, 323rd and the 401st bomb squadrons flying B17's. Active from April 1942 until May 1945 they flew 340 missions but had one of the worst casualty rates in the 8th Air force.
One of the 324th's famous B17's was the "Memphis Belle". This patch is well worn in a few places, faded and aged (patina) but it is original and is English made being both hand and machine stitched. I've mounted the patch into a frame as I want to preserve it and have ordered some UV protective glass to fit in the frame.
Size is 4 & 3/8" diameter and would have been on the breast of the A2 leather pilots jackets.

Apologies for the pictures but taken in artificial light so colours differ from the real thing. When it stops blowing a "hooley" and better day light will retake some pictures. I have it hung above my laptop in pride of place. **==

The patch was based on Bugs Bunny and i have seen others with similar designs. The 324th patch varied with a Brown or Blue Rabbit and some with the detail in the background and some without. On the 91st bomb group web page and the Bassingbourn tower museum web page they both show the 324th with a brown rabbit and the background detail.

When I see patches like this I always wonder the history behind. Where has it been, if only it could talk. Would be great to have a photo of one being worn with a B17 in the background. Congrats Paul your collection must be filling your house by now

Yes Dave, collection is filling the man cave but the wife loves her sewing and craft work so that takes care of the other spaces in the house
I'll look for some pictures and may have found one similar on the American Air Museum web site that is 91st BG. I couldn't resist its calling and had to buy it, you understand the way it is...

Here's another picture from the IWM American air museum website. Taken from a crew picture and you can see the patch on the A2 jacket.

That is one great patch Paul, didn’t realise it was that big until I saw the framed version. Have you thought of adding a picture to your patch showing the design actually on the B17

Another picture from the IWM collection (Rice C Lynn) showing the 324th insignia:

Really like this patch Paul - you have supported it perfectly with the photographic record.
