He-111B (DA+AZ) v's house

Postby pablo10 » Wed Nov 15, 2017 7:15 am

The He-111B (DA+AZ) was on a training flight July 15, 1941. The accident occurred when it was approaching Prague-Ruzyne Airfield (now Vaclav Havla International Airport). The plane was heading east towards the southern end of the runway when the student pilot Obgfr. Hans Marahrens apparently mishandled the controls and stalled the aircraft. The plane was too low and the instructor Obgfr. Otto Herbst was unable regain airspeed in time. The He-111B crashed into a house on Novotny Street (believed to be No. 974) in the village of Jeneček. Both men were killed - there were no casualties on the ground.
It wasn't exactly a place of "combat" but associated with a significant incident involving the military ... But it is nice to be able to find the location. The three houses in the photos are still there. The He-111B was heading from west to east which was left to right in the GoogleMap photo of Novotny Street. It crashed into the building marked by the arrow. The distinctive roof of the building to the east of the crash site can be seen in the GoogleMap photo.

What fantastic pictures pablo - where do you get these from  The 111 is certainly one of my favourite aircraft from WW2.

Quite sad really, just moments from landing and not concentrating properly, has cost the lives of two young airmen.

Thank fully nobody was hurt on the ground.

Great story and pictures Pab's :ymapplause:
