Reichsbahn Lamp/Lantern.

Postby The Devils Bank » Wed Nov 21, 2018 7:15 pm

Just bought myself a Reichsbahn Lamp. :ymsmug:

Just gave it a clean.. looks nice.

This lamp is made after 1937 as before this, it had the letters D R on the top lid. No Eagle.

Construction.

Postby The Devils Bank » Wed Nov 21, 2018 8:33 pm

Putting it together was easier than finding out how it came apart.

But after a bit of research, I finally found the clue how to open it up.

It's the smal screw on the back.

The back bracket simply slides down (with a bit of elbow grease) and comes apart.

Easier said than done.

The inside glass cover is held in place, by three little attachments, one fell off #-o

Reassembled.

Postby The Devils Bank » Wed Nov 21, 2018 8:45 pm

After another good clean, finally it's put back together again.

Can't find out the maker's name/code (WG) ~x(

I do believe that it's for a candle to light it up, can't see any attachment inside for a gas supply..

The third picture from top, does show some thing that it fitted onto?

Possibly a pole?

Wall Attachment.

Postby The Devils Bank » Wed Nov 21, 2018 8:57 pm

This is how it would have been displayed on a wall.

May be outside a ticket kiosk or inside a wating room? :-??

Can't see how the candle was put out quickly, if it was indeed displayed on a open platform.

Roughly about 7" x 4" and quite light to hold and with a super patina.

I'm delighted to have this little addition to my collection.

There is a piece missing from the lamp :ymsigh:

If you look at the bottom piece, you can see four clips that obviously hold some thing in place.

After some research, there was indeed a candle placed inside, but, these seem to be pre - 1937.

These candles are unusual, never seen the type before. :-\

But, on the Reichsbahn lamp, post - 1937 there is a oil can/container (?) inside.

Never thought I would be able to get one, they are so rare now..

Well, here is that container, soon to be mine

My eyes nearly popped out when I saw the price.. 40 euro.. :ymparty:

Not bad really, as it comes with a pre - 1937 lamp.

Finally, here it is after 70 years, finally complete and working as it did all those years ago.

The candle took a bit of persuading to light up  but it finally got going..

Here is the candle inside the lamp, it doesn't give off much light to be honest, quite dim.

I'm trying to find out how the candle is re-filled? May be it comes apart inside the container wick part?

I'm not really bothered, as it's working fine now.

History brought back to life once again.
