Dietrich Eckart Bronze Bust - by Ferdinand Liebermann.

Postby Dave_Holden » Mon Aug 31, 2015 7:08 pm

Here is the DE Bust I obtained last year - I believe this is only 1 of 4 ever made, unless of course they moved it from venue to venue. All evidence I have gathered so far points to this particular bust being from the Braunes Haus Munich. Originally it was in the John Horne collection. A little on Eckart below:

Dietrich Eckart (23 March 1868 – 26 December 1923) was a German journalist, playwright, poet and politician who was one of the founders of the Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (German Workers' Party - DAP), which later evolved into the Nazi Party (NSDAP). He was a key influence on Adolf Hitler in the early years of the Nazi Party and was a participant in the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch.

He died shortly after the putsch, and was elevated during the Nazi era to the status of a major thinker and writer.

The plinth was commissioned by John Horne, but it sets the piece off nicely.

Regards to all.

Dave.

What a striking piece, Dave! I wonder whether smaller versions of this bust were made and sold at the NSDAP shops during the period? The piece looks like it would lend itself well to a small, bookend or desktop-sized rendering. It appears that the marble base has been damaged...is that true or just a photographic effect? If true, and if the base was commissioned by the bust's former owner, one wonders how it sustained such bad treatment?

Thanks for sharing this historic piece,

Br. James

Firstly and most importantly - welcome to the new forum James, its great to have you here.

Yes the base is damaged in two places - which is a shame and I have often wondered how it happened. John Horne had an incredible collection, including The Fuhrers reading glasses. He wore a locket around his neck with a small bundle of the AH hair purchased from the personal barber of Hitler himself.

The bust for me certainly has a presence.

Best regards

Dave.

Thanks Barry - yes it is a special piece but still needs much research. Through the archives in the Haus der Kunst, I have located the possible foundary now long gone in Munich. I have no doubts this is a period piece but to actually locate it to which DE bust it is, has proven difficult. From the original source I still believe it is a very important bust and is one of only 4 made.

Cheers

Dave.

Hello all.

Cant remember if I ever posted these drawings on the old forum, so I will now add to this thread. I got these from my good friend Robert in Berchtesgaden, they are actual copies of the original design for the mounting of the DE Bronze Bust I believe at the Eckart House. Totally authentic and came with a mass of NSDAP paperwork. The drawings were a gift and cost me nothing

Its all still out there

That's a superb "find" Dave, I'm amazed at the stuff that's still "out" there :ymapplause:

Although they're copies, I'm sure they will be a great reference point for the future ^:)^

Thanks chaps - it all takes time to piece together and really you have to be based in the area and keep digging. I have been looking for further evidence on then AH driving cap I have, but again this will be time but for sure it is out there but I need to spend some time back in Bavaria when time allows.

Nobody knows everything in this hobby and there remains grey areas, even the experts make mistakes and I have just noted a classic on one of the leading dealer sites. For me its contacts and the rest is if you want follow the slow process of research after. But to get the item in the first place you got to be quick and take a chance

Just thought I would give you a quick update. I am waiting for a written confirmation that the bust I have in my collection actually is the bust that was mounted in the Dietrich Eckart House - (later to be renamed Hinterbrand Lodge). It was moved between 1939 and 1944 to the Platterhof Hotel. These things take time and the older generation are shy to put their names on paper. Once I have the letter it will add nicely to the history of the piece.

Cheers

Dave.
