Hitler's 50th birthday

Postby Australian Guy » Wed Oct 09, 2019 12:49 pm

Just for interest, I thought you might find this picture interesting. It was taken during his 50th birthday celebration at the German Club here in Adelaide Australia

Taken in April 1939 just a few months before the outbreak of WW2. Didn't realise there was any sort of following in Australia? Britain had its Fascist party and Oswald Mosley. Was there an Australian fascist political party during this period?

However a couple of points to consider here is the photograph was taken inside a German club not in a mainstream venue in Australia. Also Australia at that time closely followed Britain and supported them in their foreign policies ( remember Chamberlain waving that famous Munich letter) so what was good enough for the 'mother ' country was good enough for us. I think it's fair to say that at that time Australia had more fear, anger, aggression and indeed in some quarters support for Communism than Facisim. Very unique photo though Grant. Regards Mark.

Well explained Mark, I suppose there were a few Germans in Australia at the time, who supported Hitler.

Probably a small minority, who just wanted a excuse for a drink or two..

No doubt Pete and it's fair to say that public perception of Hitler was very different before the war than after it started and in the years since. In fact I think in many ways it's more intense now than ever. Talking about a drink at a German club, funny you should mention that. While not a member I am on a mailing list to a German club located in Canberra our nations capital. This year like last I will be attending their Oktoberfest celebrations with a couple of mates in a couple of weeks. Great atmosphere, food and drink aplenty and good too  Regards Mark.
