Long Tom

Postby muckaroon1960 » Mon Apr 22, 2019 7:32 pm

This is a Britains model of the 155mm American towed howitzer nicknamed "Long Tom". I've added the 50p piece to illustrate the size of this model. Picked this up today from a flea market. It's missing its towing wheels and its towing accessories and if it had the box would be worth a few quid. This is one of those things that as a kid I always wanted but never had until now. Apparently these were manned by a crew of 14 and towed by a vehicle based on the Sherman tank chassis. The barrel also reciprocates so it can be towed with the barrel in its back position.

Very collectible Paul, it's had a hard life but, keep an eye out for spare parts.

You'll be amazed where you find them

Picture of the real McCoy at IWM Duxford. This was in the land warfare museum.

How cool is that Paul, to see a full size real example of your model  I noticed that it has one different tyre. Looks like a jeep tyre. Would they be the same tyre? Thinking they may have been made to be interchangeable between the two vehicles? Regards Mark

Hi Mark, not sure but the wheels look bigger on the gun than on a jeep?
